J. Mitchell Cronin

Teaching Assistant


J. Mitchell Cronin is a first-year MFA candidate studying lighting design at the University of Maryland. A graduate of Texas’ Sam Houston State University, he received his BFA in Theatrical Design and Technology in 2014. After graduating, this native Houstonian returned to his hometown to pursue a lighting design career in the vibrant arts community in and around the city. Over the past few years, Mitchell has had the privilege to design over 100 fully-produced projects in theatre, dance, and opera. His designs have been recognized locally with awards from The Houston Press (2019 Catastrophic Theatre Company’s Curse of the Staving Class), Broadway World (2017 The Ensemble Theatre’s Simply Simone), and The Ensemble Theatre (2016 A Soulful Christmas; 2017 Simply Simone; 2019 Josephine Tonight). In addition to the companies listed below, Mitchell has also worked closely with The Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Theatre Under the Stars and other groups around Houston. He is excited to join the ranks of UMD’s design team!
