Jen Graham

Program:
Role:
Teaching Assistant

Jen Graham is a dancer, choreographer, educator, and entrepreneur based out of Baltimore, Maryland. She carries her undergraduate degree in Dance from the University of Maryland, and is currently back in residence at UMD’s School of Theatre, Dance, & Performance Studies pursuing her MFA in Choreography and Performance while simultaneously earning her Certification as a Movement Analyst in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies.

Jen is the Owner and Director of Project C Studios, a private dance school which she founded in 2006 specializing in college preparatory and pre-professional programs located in Westminster, Maryland, as well as Founder and Artistic Director of Catalyst Contemporary Dance Company, a pre-professional dance company of dancers ages 11 through 18 which tours locally and regionally. In 2010 Jen was a founding member of the collaborative contemporary dance company Flux/us Dance Projects based out of Baltimore, Maryland, and has also served as Vice President, President, and Advisor for the Maryland Council for Dance. In the spring of 2016, along with her partner John Norris, she launched the fitness lifestyle and apparel company The Loyal Brand.

Jen has been fortunate enough to train intensely under artists such as Adriane Fang, Alexander Gish, Alvin Mayes, Christopher K. Morgan, David Parsons, Sara Pearson, Doug Varone, and Nejla Yatkin, as well as study under the tutelage and mentorship of Karen Bradley, Esther Geiger, Catherine Maguire, Miriam Phillips, and Karen Studd. Jen has presented her work and performed extensively in DC, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and continues to actively create and present concert, commercial, and theatrical work locally and regionally. Jen’s students have gone on to attend some of the most prestigious college dance programs in the country, as well as work professionally with companies such as Hubbard Street Dance and Shen Wei Dance Arts.

Jen currently teaches regular classes at Project C Studios and the University of Maryland, and in 2016 will be piloting a program at UMD where she will be teaching Embodied Leadership to Cognitive Science and Neuroscience PhD Candidates. Jen continually works with public & private institutions, schools, arts organizations, studios, colleges and universities as a guest choreographer, lecturer, teacher and performer. Through her work, she strives to explore the space that lives between narrative and abstraction to spark emotional and intellectual resonance. Often times building social commentary, creating a call for action, or igniting a flame of personal enlightenment, the work she creates predominantly centers on the human condition. Believing that lines, labels, and categorizations are arbitrary and limiting, she does not confine her choreographic (or any) work to a specific medium, style, or means of presentation.

“The root of everything for me lies in the process- the process of finding, the process of learning, the process of doing, the process of creating, the processing of failing miserably, getting back up, and finding another way...”
