This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, whose plays—including Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth—are staples in high school and college English courses around the country. During the spring 2016 semester, the University of Maryland is presenting “Shakespeare@UMD 2016,” a series of events—designed to honor the anniversary of the playwright’s death—that will include film screenings, workshops, roundtables, and exhibitions.

James Hesla will defend his PhD dissertation, “The Idiosyncratic Body: Contemporary Clown Theory and Practice” on Tuesday, January 19, at 1 p.m. in the Theatre Conference Room. All are welcome to attend.

The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies has been nominated for the “Best College Theatre Program” by MD Theatre Guide’s Best of 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards. The awards honor performing arts, entertainment, and education organizations in Maryland, DC and northern Virginia.
