Professor Laurie Frederik Meer receives book award from the Association of Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE)

The Awards Committee, and the Book Award Subcommittee, of ATHE have awarded Dr. Frederik Meer an Honorable Mention for Trumpets in the Mountains: Theater and the Politics of National Culture in Cuba in ATHE’s Outstanding Book Award for 2012

Honorable Mention for the Outstanding Book Award of 2012 will be formally presented to Professor Frederik Meer at the ATHE Conference in Orlando, Florida this August (Association for Theater in Higher Education).

Dr. Frederik Meer's book, Trumpets in the Mountains: Theater and the Politics of National Culture in Cuba, was published by Duke University Press.

ATHE's Outstanding Book Award representative commented: "The committee was delighted to read your book, which we felt offers unique and insightful readings of a breadth of examples. The research, both fieldwork-driven and archival is very impressive and the book is highly engaging, combining thick description with strong analysis and a clear narrative arc, to produce a clear sense of both the importance of the individual case studies as well as obvious extensions of the argument within a variety of other contexts, from Cuban arts to rural performance to post-revolutionary theatre to name just a few.  All of the committee was struck by the fluency with which the book is written, which seems to perhaps echo your own practices not only as an ethnographer, but as a dancer as well.  The book was immensely enjoyable to read and we are delighted to recognize it with an Honorable Mention."

Congratulations Professor Frederik Meer!
