MFA candidate in lighting design, Alberto Segarra, offered internship in NYC to work on Broadway Show

October 27, 2014 School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies

The MFA in Design graduate program provides opportunities such as Alberto Segarra's internship to work with Lighting Designer Ken Posner.

Alberto Segarra, MFA Candidate in lighting design in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, interned as Kenneth Posner's Assistant Lighting Designer for the Broadway production of Disgraced.

Alberto first met Mr. Posner in the Fall of 2013 when Posner participated in a lighting design graduate class in the School. At the time he was working on the Broadway Production of If/Then, at the National Theatre in Washington DC.. The students in the graduate class went to the National Theatre to observe Posner working and discuss his ideas and concepts for the show.

Last May, 2014, at the MFA In Design Portfolio Review at Studio Theatre, Segarra had the opportunity to speak again with Posner. He was curious to learn about the evolution and growth of If/Then, from the previews in DC to the opening night in Broadway. They reviewed Alberto's design presentation at the Review, and discussed Alberto's work in designing Twilight LA; 1992 and the Dance Thesis Spring 2014, My Tempest. At the end of the conversation, Mr Posner offered an internship to Segarra, to work with him in his upcoming production of Disgraced at Lyceum Theatre, Broadway, NY.

Alberto spent a week in New York and met many wonderful people.

It was an honor getting to experience the work process of a lighting designer of such high caliber as Mr. Posner and it was a tremendous experience. Above all, being able to see first hand how it feels to 'be inside Broadway' is what it is all about
