Theatre and Performance Studies Professor Releases New Book About Renowned Playwright David Henry Hwang

Theatre and Performance Studies' Esther Kim Lee Releases New Book on Renowned Playwright David Henry Hwang

School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies associate professor and associate director Esther Kim Lee released her new book, The Theatre of David Henry Hwang, on December 17, 2015.

David Henry Hwang is a renowned Chinese-American playwright who has made a significant impact both nationally and internationally. A Tony Award and OBIE Award winner, his work includes the plays M. Butterfly, Golden Child, Yellow Face, The Dance and the Railroad, and FOB, and the Broadway musical Aida. Hwang is also a screenwriter and librettist.

The Theatre of David Henry Hwang offers a study of his plays and other works in theatre. It is a comprehensive collection that touches on the playwright’s early work (which addresses issues of identity and cultural assimilation particular to Chinese Americans); his lesser known plays; his development as a writer; and identity politics and multiculturalism. The book features a chapter on M. Butterfly, which received the Tony Award for Best Play. It also provides an in-depth study of Hwang’s writing style and three essays by leading scholars in Asian-American theatre.

The Theatre of David Henry Hwang is published by Bloomsbury Methuen Drama.
