ABOUT THE EVENT
Join us for a free film screening of the the award-winning documentary, Call Me Dancer (2023), which premiered in New York on December 15, 2023.
Call Me Dancer (2023) tells the story of the extraordinary journey of Manish Chuahan, a street dancer in Mumbai, India. Despite his parents objections—but with the guidance and support of an Israeli master, Yehuda Maor—Chuahan sets out to become an internationally acclaimed ballet dancer. Together, Manish and Yehuda transform each other's lives, searching to uncover who and what they are. Yehuda seeks a purpose and a place to call home. Manish dreams of dancing on the world-stage but struggles to break free from the confines of his own economic and social circumstances. Filmed in India, the United Kingdom, Israel and the United States, the film features two original songs by Jay Sean, music by Bangladeshi American hip-hop artist Anik Khan and a score by award-winning, British-Indian composer Nainita Desai and Nina Humphreys.
The film screening will be followed by a conversation with the film's director Leslie Shampaine, the film's editor Jennifer Beman and Stephanie Shonekan, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. A reception will follow in The Clarice’s Grand Pavilion.
