Join us virtually for Rebels and Revels: A Virtual Symposium on the Theatre of the Middle East. The symposium will take place throughout the month of April (see the full schedule below).

The Rebels and Revels symposium is a public humanities event that explores through scholarship and performance how theatre in the Middle East is shaped in its diaspora, and how the artists navigate Middle Eastern theatre history in their creative processes.

  • Keynote Speaker: Dr. Edward Ziter (New York University)
  • Paper Presented by Mona Merhi (University of Washington)

Thursday, April 8, 3PM - Women and the Archive

  • Paper presentation by Rana Esfandiary (University of Kansas)
  • Paper presentation by Marjan Moosavi and Sarah Fahmy (University of Maryland and University of Colorado)

Thursday, April 15, 3PM - Rethinking Institutional Theatre

  • Paper Presentation by Deborah Norris (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland)
  • Paper Presentation by Matthew Randle-Bent (Northwestern University)

Monday, April 19, 7PM

  • Performance of M(o)ther by Vahdat Veganeh, followed by a Q&A

Tuesday, April 20, 5PM

  • Performance of Strung Up at the Airport: A Short Play about Identity and Integration by Azadeh Mohammadi Knagarani, followed by a Q&A

Wednesday, April 21, 7PM

  • A Staged Reading of Azhdehak by Bahram Beyzaie, translated by Shaoul Rick Chason & Nikta Sabouri, followed by a Q&A

Thursday, April 22, 3PM - Virtual Performance in the Diaspora

  • An artist-roundtable in collaboration with Re-Connect Online Performance Festival
